News EditorTwo area men were killed in weekend car crashes on area highways.
Donald Marois, 50, of 25086 Keystone Ave., Wyoming Township, was killed when his car went off the road early Saturday morning as he attempted to avoid a pedestrian walking on CR-23.
Lucas Rossow, 23, of Hugo, died when his southbound vehicle on I-35E was hit head-on Saturday evening by a northbound vehicle that crossed the I-35E median.
According to the Chisago County Sheriffís office, Marois was eastbound in a 1990 Chevrolet Corvette and was a tenth of a mile east of 9912 Green Lake Trail (CR-23) at 12:35 a.m. when he encountered a pedestrian in the road. Police said Marois swerved to avoid the man, skidded sideways and clipped a utility pole.
Marois was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Capt. Doug Sampson said a 43-year-old man who lives near the accident scene in Wyoming Township was questioned. regarding his involvement in the fatal crash. He was transported to the Dakota County Detox Unit in Hastings.
Investigation reports will be referred to the Chisago County Attorneyís Office for consideration of charges against the man. Reports described the man as intoxicated, Sampson said.
The Minnesota State Patrol was called to complete an accident scene reconstruction.
Marois was less than a mile from his home when the crash happened.
I-35E crash
The crash that claimed the life of Lucas Rossow took place at 10:36 p.m. Saturday just north of CR-96 in White Bear Lake.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Rossowís 2000 GMC Sonoma was southbound when it was struck by a northbound vehicle driven by Melissa Munson, 30, of Vadnais Heights.
Munson also died in the crash.
The State Patrol said Munson was traveling in the northbound left lane of I-35E when she lost control of her 2000 Chevrolet Blazer. She entered the center median, crossed into the southbound lane and collided with Rossowís vehicle in the left southbound lane.
Rossowís vehicle caught fire upon impact, according to the State Patrol.
The accident remains under investigation.
Funeral arrangements for Lucas Rossow and Donald Marois were pending at deadline this week.
