Wyoming Area ReporterGas-powered scooters will be banned from city-owned bicycle paths and trails, Wyoming City Council voted Monday night.
Council took the consensus action following two meetings of a citizensí committee that had council, police and community representation.
City Attorney Tom Miller was directed to prepare a draft ordinance for the prohibition.
Council action followed a number of complaints raised by the public and safety issues. The proposed rules would also limit hours of operation to between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. throughout the city.
Youth under age 15 would only be allowed to operate electric-powered scooters between sunrise and sundown. Youth over 15 would be allowed to operate electric scooters at any time provided they have operational lights.
Council will take up the ordinance discussion at a future meeting, possibly Monday, May 17, the next regular session.
Day of Prayer
In another move Monday, council voted 5-0 to adopt a proclamation for Day of Prayer to coincide with the National Day of Prayer at noon today (Thursday).
Local officials, church leaders and citizens will gather at the Wyoming Municipal Building from noon to 12:45 p.m. to pray for the nation and community.
In the event of rain, the event will be at Wyoming United Methodist Church.
The decision on the formal proclamation, signed by Mayor Vern Haag, had been delayed at the previous meeting to allow more time for city council discussion.
Other business
In other business Monday, council:
ïAnnounced a special meeting for purposes of discussing the cityís lawn watering ordinance to take place after the open house, 8:05 p.m., Thursday, May 13 at city hall.
The meeting will follow a public open house for the public to meet new City Administrator Jill Teetzel and Chief of Police Anthony Pangal.
ïLearned from Council member Ted Phillips that the Goodview Park ground breaking ceremony is set for 8 a.m., Saturday, May 15 on park clean up day.
